Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) /Ferro Ally furnace

A Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) is a specialized electric arc furnace primarily used for producing ferroalloys such as ferrochrome, ferromanganese, and ferrosilicon.

Fume generation in a Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) occurs due to the combustion of the charge mix (ore + coke or coal) during the arcing process. The fume temperature in SAF typically ranges between 350°C and 500°C, depending on the roof design, which can be classified into:

  1. Open Type
  2. Semi-Open Type
  3. Closed Type
The hazardous fumes and gases generated include Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Oxides (SOx), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), along with particulate matter, fine dust, and metal oxides, among other pollutants.
The furnace roof functions as a suction hood, incorporating one or multiple exhaust chimneys through which duct tapping is provided for fume extraction. These fumes are then directed to a filtration system, commonly referred to as a Gas Cleaning Plant (GCP), Fume Treatment Plant (FTP), or Fume Extraction System (FES).

Fume Extracrion System / Air Pollution Control System for Refining Furnace includes-

Stack dampers
Fume Conveying Duct
Spark Arrestor/Force Draft Cooler
Pulse Jet Bag-House
Induced Draft Fan
