Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)

Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) play a crucial role in modern steelmaking but produce substantial fumes during operation. Efficient fume extraction is vital for ensuring environmental compliance and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

Fume Generation in EAFs

During the melting and refining processes, Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) generate hot, dusty gases containing particulate matter and pollutants. Due to the batch nature of EAF operations—including charging, melting, refining, and tapping—fume emissions are intermittent yet intense.

These emissions arise from high-temperature reactions and the volatilization of elements present in the charged materials.

Primary Fume Extraction System

To effectively control emissions, specialized fume extraction systems are utilized. A common method involves a primary suction point, known as the “fourth hole,” positioned on the furnace’s top cover for direct fume extraction from within the furnace.

Due to the high temperatures of these fumes, the use of water-cooled ducts is essential to prevent overheating and maintain system integrity.

Secondary Fume Extraction System

Secondary fume extraction systems, such as canopy hoods above the shed or local exhaust hoods, are installed to capture emissions generated during charging and tapping operations. These systems operate alongside primary extraction methods, ensuring comprehensive fume control throughout the EAF’s operational cycle.

Selecting the right filter materials is crucial, requiring high mechanical strength, thermal resistance, and chemical durability to withstand the harsh conditions of EAF operations.

Implementing efficient fume extraction and control systems not only ensures compliance with environmental regulations but also enhances workplace safety by minimizing exposure to hazardous emissions.

The collected fumes are typically routed to gas cleaning devices, which generally include:

Moving Sleeve /Movable Water cooled Hood
Combustion Chamber
Water & Air cooled Ducts
Gas Cooler / Force Draft Cooler
Bag-House
Induced Draft Fan
Stack / Chimney
